On occasion of Jamie Kruse’s art installation Thingness of Energy, The New School’s Office for Sustainability is offering a public tour of select buildings on the New School campus, with a special focus on the infrastructure that materially sustains the teachings at the university.

Gwen Kilvert, Assistant Director for Sustainability and Energy Management, is joined by members of the New School Facilities Department as she visits vital energy crossing points of the university such as high-efficiency boilers, a new “cool roof,” and an electrical room.

Before embarking on the tour, Jamie Kruse offers an introduction to her work Thingness of Energy, which also makes visible some of the materials flows of energy hidden in basements, on rooftops, or by the pipes, wires, and conduits that enable energy transmission, production, and consumption. On view through April 24 in the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center, the artist’s project essentially asks what the consequences might be if “anticipating geologic scales of force, change, and effect became a common design specification for energy production and distribution, policy-making, and infrastructure design.”

Thingness of Energy is an art project by Jamie Kruse, developed and produced in collaboration with The New School’s Office for Sustainability, the Sheila C.
